…and before I even begin, I do realise that many will not share my point of view — but it is just that ‘my point of view’. This article is not about telling anyone to be different, or suggesting there is anything wrong with anyone the way they are — simply that in my opinion, there is still a place for elegance.

In a rapidly changing world, where trends come and go at lightning speed, is elegance still relevant?

I’ve always held onto a single belief: the timeless virtue of elegance. This belief has been my compass, guiding my choices and shaping my worldview.

What is ‘elegance’?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, elegance is “the quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance or manner”.

To me, ‘elegance’ can be seen in various forms, from the way an individual dresses, to the design of an object, to the manner in which someone carries themselves. Elegance can even be seen in a golf swing!

Elegance, contrary to some opinions, isn’t just about dressing well or having refined tastes. It’s a philosophy, a way of life, and in my opinion, is still important today.

From the earliest days of my life, I was introduced to the allure of elegance.

The television was always on in the house in which I grew up, and I loved all the old movies (that weren’t so old back then!). I watched as those on the screen who embodied this quality of elegance commanded respect and admiration without demanding it. They spoke without raising their voices, and their mere presence would often fill the room. In them, I saw a powerful yet understated strength, a confidence that didn’t need to boast, and a grace that was magnetic.

Yes, they were beautiful and handsome — but it wasn’t about that… There are many beautiful and handsome people that are far from elegant in manner or deed.

So why, in today’s world when many prefer hoodies and sweat pants, is elegance still important?

Elegance can provide an anchor in the chaotic sea of transient fashions. While styles change and fads fade, elegance remains steadfast. It’s not about wearing the most expensive clothes or owning the latest gadgets; it’s about presenting oneself with dignity and grace, regardless of the situation.

In our digital age, where everything is shared and nothing is private, there’s a hunger for authenticity. Elegance, in its purest form, is authentic. It’s not a mask or a facade; it’s an honest reflection of who someone is. Those who truly possess elegance don’t put on airs or pretend to be something they’re not. They are genuine, and in a world of filters and facades, this authenticity is a breath of fresh air.

In professional settings, elegance sets individuals apart. Elegance, both in demeanor and appearance, often correlates with professionalism. It sends a message that one respects themselves, their work, and the people around them.

On a personal level, embracing elegance has enriched my life in countless ways. It has opened doors, fostered meaningful conversations, and given me a sense of stability. In a world that often shouts, the quiet strength of elegance speaks volumes — at least it does to me.

While some (ok, many) may argue that elegance is outdated or irrelevant in our modern society, I firmly believe otherwise. It’s more than just an aesthetic; it’s a mindset, a way of life. Elegance is about finding beauty in simplicity, strength in humility, and grace in every gesture. In an ever-changing world, the timeless charm of elegance remains a testament to honouring one’s self and others — and so, as the world continues to change and shift, my belief in the power and importance of elegance remains unwavering.
